Photographs of Qasr al-Kharanah
1917-18
series
4 items
Among the Lawrence collection there are four photographs (two are the same image) of the castle ‘Qasr al-Kharanah’ (the spelling varies) in Jordan. This was an early castle (8th century?) from the Islamic era, built in the desert to the east of Amman.
These images are from among Lawrence’s wartime photographs. The main collection of these is in the Imperial War Museum, with copies in the Liddell Hart collection at King’s College, London. The photographs would have been taken, either in late 1917 or during 1918, on one of the occasions when Lawrence was occupying the Roman fort at Azraq, further to the east.
