Scope and content
Depictions of fonts from different parts of England, especially (but not exclusively) from Buckinghamshire, Kent, Lincolnshire, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Oxfordshire, Sussex, Wiltshire and Yorkshire. There is very little material from Devon and Cornwall, Wales and Scotland. Most of the fonts are found in parish churches but there are also depictions of fonts – their form and decoration – from Norwich cathedral, as well as from France, Germany, Italy and Spain, and holy water stoops from Spain and Germany. The volume also includes sketches of five piscinae in English parish churches.
Many hand-drawn and tinted sketches are annotated with the place and date that the font was recorded. People are often depicted beside the fonts and sometimes workmen’s tools are shown leaning up against them, possibly to show scale. The fonts are usually depicted in their setting either inside the church or in churchyards.
Media include printed illustrations of fonts (engravings and drawings), printed texts about certain fonts taken from books and journals which have been glued into the album, handwritten notes, hand-drawn sketches tinted with watercolour captioned with place names and dates, one full-page painting (in oil?) of unidentified font.
