An accumulation of papers, mostly notes taken by Gowland from published works, but including cuttings from publications, correspondence and photographs. They are in no discernible order, and are of varying shapes and sizes. The contents are:

1. Loose papers, mainly notes, bibliographical lists, and some early drafts (not all in Gowland's hand).

2. Correspondence with Flinders Petrie:
- 1899, July: referring to Gowland's paper on 'early metallurgy' [Archaeologia 56 (1898), 267 - 322];
- 1912: enclosing proofs from 'Wainwright's notes on Egyptian iron just coming out in a few days in the British School volume'.

3. Cuttings, proofs and offprint:
- cutting with article by Herbert Kilburn Scott, 'Iron making in Brazil', Engineering and Mining Journal, 22 November 1907, pp 679-80. 1 sheet.
- cutting with article by CV Bellamy, 'A West African smelting-house', The Ironmonger, [date of issue not shown], pp 35-40. 3 sheets.
- advance proof of article by Bennett H Brough, 'The Early use of iron' (stapled as a leaflet, 16 pages) [journal and date not shown].
- advance proof of article by Thomas Turner, 'Note on some remains of early iron manufacture in Staffordshire', Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute 1912 (stapled as a leaflet, 10 pages): stamped 'Confidential until the meeting'.
- offprint of article by Robert Munro, 'A sketch of lake-dwelling research', Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh 20 (1895), pp 385-411.

4. Photographic prints, mounted on card, annotated on back:
- 'A. Roman Iron (x 60 diameters) - showing particles of slag and contained oxide which has oxidised on surface.'
- 'B. Roman Iron (x 120 diameters) Central portion of "A" enlarged.'
- 'C. Roman Iron (x 120 diameters) Another portion of same specimen showing crack adjoining slag.'
For 'C' see also GOW/03/10, no. 7.

5. Three proof sheets for illustrations. Although not identified by any annotation, they were used for:
- Gowland's Huxley Memorial lecture for 1912, 'The Metals in Antiquity', printed in Journal of the Anthropological Institute 42 (1912), fig 5, p 280.
- Gowland's Huxley Memorial lecture for 1912, 'The Metals in Antiquity', printed in Journal of the Anthropological Institute 42 (1912), fig 7, p 282.
