Scope and content
This accumulation was boxed separately. Inside the box a word-processed note describes the contents as 'Photographs of William Gowland's excavations at Stonehenge, 1901-02 taken by Clarissa Frances Miles', noting 'a set of 20 photographs, mounted'. In fact, 21 mounted prints are included. Of these, 19 have counterparts in the set of photographs held at the Wiltshire Museum, attributed to EH Goddard.
The box is also contains a selection of other material relating to Gowland's methods for the excavation and particularly to the preparation of his report.
The contents of this box appear to have been assembled in their present form no later than 2019, by extraction from GOW/01, as part of the selection process for proposed loans to an exhibition planned by English Heritage to take place at Stonehenge in 2020. Pencil annotations to documents in this box and elsewhere in GOW/01 indicate that up to 26 individual items were considered for loan, although in the end only 20 were selected. The exhibition at Stonehenge eventually took place in 2022-23.
