Scope and content
Also labelled “BEWCASTLE CROSS; S. & D. JACK, SLIDE MAKERS, CARLISLE”.

Bewcastle Cross, at St. Cuthbert’s Church in Bewcastle. The 7th century Cross is a decorated Anglo-Saxon sculpture, with a reconstruction existing at St Mary’s Church at Wreay. The top of the cross shows John the Baptist holding the Lamb of God, with the other figures possibly being St John or an Anglo-Saxon nobleman. Some of the gravestones have been removed from the Church grounds, especially against the walls of the Church tower. This image is taken on the south-west side of the Church, facing north-east.
