Scope and content
'William Wyrley his booke' (fol. 1). Pedigrees, heraldic and church notes, mostly relating to Staffordshire, compiled mainly by William Wyrley (1565-1618), Rouge Croix Pursuivant 1604; mostly compiled late 16th century.

The heraldic material includes:- Arms of Staffordshire gentry from an ancient manuscript in the College of Arms (from the last County Roll, supplying some names and arms not in SAL/MS/664/4, fols. 12v-14v; inf. J. A. Goodall, FSA), fols. 4v-5; arms, with descriptive phrases, beginning 'Le roy Henri deu nous doint Joyie de..', embroidered on a piece of cloth 'of Tyssue', fol. 7v; arms in Lichfield Cathedral, fols. 14-16v; arms on the Valence tombs at Westminster Abbey' of my boyse takyng outt..', fol. 50v; arms on a fan made for one of the Boughtons, fol. 54v. Pedigrees, throughout, with excerpts from charters, include families of Wyrley, 1592, fols. 58-62, Comberford and Heronville, fols. 63v-71, with their arms, fol. 55; autograph letter of Sampson Erdeswyk (antiquary, mentor of Wyrley, d. 1603) to William Comberford, 12 Jan. 1593/4, relating to the families of Comberford and Heronville, fols. 31-2v. Church notes, fols. 83-105v. Miscellaneous items relate to:- A committal for recusancy of Richard Bidulph (Biddulph) with a form of protestation to be signed by him, Jan. 1588/9, fol. 33r, v; Latin verses on changes of English kings, beginning 'Anglorum mores, perversi deteriores', fol. 56v. Indexes, fols. 107v-8. Coloured shields, crests, etc., from the church of Stoke Rocheford (Kirkstoke), Lincs., including those on the brass (1503) of Oliver St John and his wife Elizabeth (Bigod), from a different MS, bound in at fols. 115-16.
