Devotional anthology containing prayers and meditations of St Anselm and others, hymns, etc.; first half 12th century, with later additions. Apparently written in Durham (references to St Cuthbert, fols.128-31). Texts (fols.5-150v), numbered 1-34 as in the contents list (fol.2r,v), added c. 1400, which also lists three further prayers (now lacking) as nos.35-7. No.34 (fol.150v) ends imperfectly. Further prayers added, 12th century (fols.39v, 151-2v, 155v); c. 1400 (fol.3r,v); 15th century (fol.153). Contents:- Prayers and meditations of St Anselm, nos.2,8c, 9-21, 23,26, 27,32 (see F.Schmitt, ed., Anselmi opera omnia (Edinburgh, 1946), 1-91); Carolingian prayers, nos.3,5a,6; hymn by Berengar of Tours, no.7; prayer to the BVM by Maurilius of Rouen, no.22; the prayer O beata et intemerata, no.24; hymn and prayer to St Cuthbert, nos.29,30. Some items are attributed here and in other anthologies to St Augustine. For further details on contents, bibliography, and an edition of the non-Anselmian texts, see T.Bestul, A Durham Book of Devotions (Toronto Medieval Latin Texts 18, 1987). A 14th-century note on the contents (fol.1v) refers to an epistle of St Anselm 'in libro dni T.de Corbri[g]' (monk of Durham). Initial D (fol.5) in green with foliate decoration in red and purple; smaller initials throughout. Text heightened in places with yellow wash, particularly the name of St Cuthbert in no.30.
