Scope and content
Original notes and drawings made by or for Sir Edward Dering of monuments and arms in churches in Kent; 1628-34. Consists of pen and ink drawings relating to 32 parishes in Kent, including Ashford, Cranbrook, Maidstone and Sittingbourne, with MS descriptions. Dering may have been assisted by John Philipot, Somerset Herald (Arch. Cant., 1 (1858), 51; but see A.J., 27 (1947), 11). Original index of names, fols. vi-xvii. Draft pencil drawings in another MS relating to Dering's collection (now Kent Record Office, Maidstone, U. 350/Z. 24) include Ightham (not in the present volume). A note by Dering, fol. v, (now obscured by his bookplate, fol. iv), explains that entries not underlined in red had been added by him 'upon good certainty' (note transcribed by Herbert L. Smith, fol. iii). See also Arch. Cant., 1 (1858), 176-83; 2 (1859), 103-10; 4 (1861), 117-22; A.J., 27 (1947), 11-23.
